2010 Season

Dear All
Hope you are well. It's that time of the year when we ask for
you to get in your entries for the SFSS Summer Cricket Competitions!
The entry form is in the Entry Form Section above which needs to be
printed off, filled in with your Head teachers signature and returned
to me by post or fax. (address/fax number is on the form itself)
The deadline for returns is FRIDAY 19th MARCH.
The AGM & Fixtures meeting will take place once again at Sheffield Park Academy,
but the WEEK BEFORE EASTER on Monday 29th MARCH starting at 4.30pm prompt.
Please make every effort to attend or send someone in your absence if you can't make it.
We have decided to hold the meeting before Easter this year so that schools can get
cracking with fixtures straight after Easter rather than wasting that week.
Any questions please let me know
Thanks
Jon Beeden

SHEAF SPORTS AND TROPHIES SPONSORS OF SHEFFIELD SCHOOLS UNDER 15 CRICKET TROPHY

ASSOCIATION REPORT 2008-9

The SFSS Cricket Association AGM held on Tues 23rd April 2009 was a vibrant affair, and the best attended yet. All officers were duly re-elected.

Secondary Schools Competitions

22 schools entered teams into the cricket leagues this season and in total 59 teams were entered in the 4 different age-groups, the most entries for 5 years. Last year's new initiative of ‘development leagues', where schools who wish to enter  teams of a lesser competitive ability to play cricket against other teams of a similar ability, ran at Y8 and Y10.

By the time the results deadline arrived, over 60 competitive cricket matches had taken place over 9 weeks, which was somewhat down on last year by a good 20 matches due to the weather. The final league standings are shown below, with teams qualifying for the semi-finals shown by an ‘*'

The Semi-Finals saw the following line-ups, with the team in bold winning through to the final:

Y7                                                                               Y9

High Storrs  v  King Ecgberts                       Ecclesfield  v  Birley

Abbeydale  v  Hinde House                           Abbeydale  v  Silverdale

For the fourth year in succession since the restructuring of Sheffield school's cricket the ‘Finals Day' took place at the fantastic venue of Abbeydale  park, home of Sheffield Collegiate CC. For the very first time the weather dictated that the reserve date of Tues 14th July needed to be used. Once again all 8 teams involved had a formal ‘lunch' between the 2 innings of their respective matches, where the 2 opposing teams and staff sat around one table in the clubhouse.

In the Y7 ‘DB Sports' final King Ecgberts batted first and smashed a phenomenal 171 for 4 from their allotted 20 overs, with A.Stevens hitting 53 and Harry Simpson 58. The highlights of Firth Park's bowling were Stevens an excellent 2 wkts for 12 runs and Pearson 2 for 30. In reply Firth Park were valiant in their attempt to chase down the runs but fell short with a very credible 131 for 5. The King Ecgberts bowling pair of Choudary and Clarke kept the Firth Pk batters honest with figures of 1 for 20 and 1 for 28 respectively. Man of the match was Harry Simpson who received his engraved plate and commemorative plaque (as did all man of the match winners).

In the Y8 ‘SHC Online TV'final High Storrs batted first against an Abbeydale bowling attack. Abbeydale bowled very well to restrict High storrs to 64 for 8, with Mohammed 3 for 13, Aslam 2 for 11 and Amjad 1 for 5 from his 5 overs all returning fantastic bowling figures. Isaac Sellars top scored for High Storrs with 19 runs, with Robert Basu chipping in with 14. The scene was set for a very tight match but the High Storrs bowlers had other ideas and set about destroying the Abbeydale Y8 team who were blasted out for only 12 runs. Sam Wise returned figures of 4 wkts for 2 runs, with Aleem Khan 3 wkts for 1 run and Robert Basu 3 wkts for 8 runs. Robert Basu of High Storrs was named man of the match for his runs, wickets, and a fine slip catch towards the end of the match, not to mention captaining his team to a fabulous victory. NB. It was also a fitting choice as Robert was injured and therefore didn't play in last year's Y7 final when his team lost by 1 run on the final ball of the match!

In the Y9 ‘Pro4Sport' Final Silverdale batted first against Firvale. The bowling attack did well in restricting Silverdale to 79 for 9 with Dillawaiz Ahmed taking a superb 5 for 17, and Hamazah Younis 1 for 14. Lewis Gill top scored with 20 for Silverdale. Firvale therefore required 4 an over from their 20 overs but were struggling at the half way stage. Joe Marvin 3 for 13 and C.Nixon 1 for 11 pinned the Firvale batters down but in the end Zobair Khaliq with 12 not out hit the winning runs for Firvale. Man of the match was Dillawaiz Ahmed for his terrific ‘fifer' performance!

Perhaps the most outstanding performance was reserved for the Y10 ‘Sheaf Sports Trophy' Final. Ecclesfield batted first against a dogged Abbeydale bowling line-up. Although Ahmed with 2 for 33 and Amjad with 1 for 31 did well Ecclesfield motored to 156 for 4 with James martin hitting an astounding 98 not out from 74 balls. His first 50 came off 44 balls and he hit 13 fours and 1 six. James required a 6 from the final ball of the innings but only managed a 4, leaving him stranded 2 short of what would have been the first century in a Sheffield Schools Final. Joe Denby added support with the next highest score of 20. In reply Abbeydale were always up against it but Ahmed with 43 and Amjad with 30 made it interesting at the half way stage. Excellent bowling from the Ecclesfield pair of Joe Chatterton with 4 wkts for 20 and Ryan Stringer with 2 for 15 from his 5 overs put the game out of Abbeydales sight, however, and they fell short with an otherwise very respectable 115 for 7. James martin was named man of the match and was also the deserving winner of the ‘Frank Schofield trophy' for the most outstanding individual performance of the day. This very special award will be presented to James at the Sheffield Federation of schools Sports AGM in November.

Well done to ALL finalists who represented their schools with such distinction on the day and, once again, put on 4 fantastic finals for the truly impressed spectators. It was also fabulous once again, and for the third year in succession, to see 4 different schools winning the 4 competitions, proving that no one school has a monopoly on outstanding cricket within Sheffield Schools, and that competitive cricket is alive and well in the city.

Roll of Honour

Y7 ‘D.B Sports' Trophy - King Ecgberts 171-4 beat Firth Park 131-5

Y8 ‘SHC Online' Trophy -High Storrs 64-8 beat Abbeydale 12 all out

Y9 ‘Pro4sport' Trophy - Firvale 83-7 beat Silverdale 79-9

Y10 ‘Sheaf Sports' Trophy - Ecclesfield 156-4 beat Abbeydale 115-7

‘Man of the match' trophies were given out at the end of each match; the adjudication was done by the members of staff in charge of the 2 schools involved.

The 2 competitons from last year without a sponsor found backing this year, meaning that all competitions this year were sponsored. The £100 (for a 2 year tenure) paid by each sponsor once again helped towards covering costs of medals and man-of-the-match trophies etc. Many thanks then must go to ‘Sheaf Sports & trophies' and ‘DB Sports' for their continued support, and the new sponsors of ‘SHC Online' and ‘Pro4sport'. The trophies and medals were given out at the presentations after each final, and it was a fitting way to conclude an excellent season. Sheffield Newspapers once again came down to cover the finals day event and indeed a photograph and quite impressive write-up of all the finals was published the very next day.

Thank you to ‘SHC Online' who filmed the Y8 and Y10 finals and produced DVD's of both, which were offered for sale as a momento of a special occasion. Footage of both finals can also be found on the SFSS Website. This was the first year that the cricket association has done this and I feel it was a success.

Many thanks must also go to the local league umpires and scorers who, once again, came to support Sheffield Schools Cricket on ‘Finals day'. They were Fred Saxton, Pete Dixon, Harold Burdett, John Bull, Ken Lamb and most importantly Chris Drury who organizes the aforementioned gentlemen for me every year.

I must thank all the teaching staff who gave up their time unconditionally once again this season, so that young people could play cricket. At a time when it is becoming increasingly more onerous to take teams away from schools to play fixtures it is heartwarming to see that teachers in Sheffield schools are willing to do so, and enthusiastic about continuing to offer such opportunities to young sports players.

Primary School Cricket (Raynor Trophy)

Once again Steve Alexander, recently retired Head of Brookhouse Junior School, organised the primary school level competition. 25 schools entered and were divided into five sections, based on the location of the school.

On Monday 13th July Mosborough and Abbeydale contested a fantastic final at Acres Hill Primary School. Mosborough had played some superb cricket to reach the final, backed up by some excellent fielding displays and accurate bowling, most notably by Alfie Gleadall (Y4) who claimed 15 wickets during the competition. Not to be outdone, his brother, Archie Gleadall (Y5) had already amassed 208 runs by this stage and had yet to be dismissed.

In murky conditions Abbeydale won the toss and chose to field. Abbeydale bowled extremely accurately and were excellent in the field limiting the boundaries and putting pressure on the Mosborough batsmen. After an excellent quick scoring start Mosborough lost wickets regularly and never quite found their rhythm. After 15 eventful overs Mosborough reached 80-5 (Archie Gleadall 51 not out). Abbeydale had every right to be pleased with their efforts and now looked well placed for victory.

Not to be deterred Mosborough were equally as efficient in the field and Alfie Gleadall made an early breakthrough leaving Abbeydale on 14-1 after 3 overs. Abbeydale then stepped up their game and begin to score freely. They ran well between the wickets and boundaries began to flow. Mosborough however would not give in and wickets fell at regular intervals. At 62-4, after a run out and a wicket apiece from Callum Turner and Lewis Rodgers the game was finely poised with Abbeydale requiring 19 from 29 balls.

After being last years losing finalists Abbeydale were not to be outdone and ran out winners after some superb boundary hitting by the final pair. The winning runs being scored by a fantastic reverse sweep. Congratulations to Abbeydale on being deserved winners.

(Report from Dave Holland, Mosborough Primary School)

It only remains for me to thank Johnathon Beeden for his invaluable support in helping me to organize everything this year, those members of staff who give up their valuable time to allow their pupils to play (and who got results in to me on time), Sheffield Collegiate CC for their fantastic support yet again for ‘Finals day', Steve Alexander for his continued efforts with Primary school cricket, the four aforementioned sponsors, and the Federation for their continued support & guidance.
