Warrington U12's v's Sheffield U12's, 18th April 2009
Junior Star League
Sheffield travelled across the Pennines to face a Warrington side that had not dropped any points in the league and were sitting at the top of the Junior Star League. Our boys like a challenge and seem to raise their game against the better teams, could they do it today?
The game started off pretty even with both sides sharing possession. Warrington looked comfortable on the ball and tried to pass it about. Sheffield pressed and closed down every pass (I mean every pass, every player was not giving anything up) and started to get the upper hand without really creating a chance. Sam Nuttall had to make a few heart stopping catches in the Sheffield goal from some long range bouncing shots. The half time whistle went 0-0.
The second half started in the same vain with both sides battling for every ball. George Scott the lone Sheffield forward never stopped running (as did the entire Sheffield team). Oliver May (on his debut) and Mac having a excellent game at the back. Jed Phillips was put through and saw his hot well saved by the Warrington keeper. Warrington then broke down the right and crossed well, the flight of the ball was misjudged by the Sheffield keeper Niall Wilkinson and the Warrington forward scrambled the ball into an empty net. 1-0 to Warrington. The Warrington celebrations didn't last too long. Sheffield were not going to be beaten today and every player showed fantastic resilience and never gave up. They battled for everything and after another corner; the ball broke to George Scott who floated the ball passed a despairing Warrington keeper into the net. 1-1. Jack Barker had gone close minutes earlier seeing his shot pushed round the post. The last few minutes were scrappy but Sheffield deserved their draw today, if not more. Full time 1-1.
The players were magnificent today; each one of them played their part. The never give up attitude shone through again. It's likely we'll meet Warrington in the cup semi-final, unless Leeds pulls off a shock victory. You never now...it's a funny old game.
MOM- Oliver May - Outstanding debut performance in defence.
